Coordinate Measuring Machines

Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are devices used for dimensional measuring. These machines use a moving measuring probe on an X-Y-Z grid coordinate system to obtain the coordinates of points on an object’s surface on a worktable. CMMs can be manually controlled by an operator or automatically via Direct Computer Control (DCC).

CMMs are used in manufacturing and assembly processes to test a part or assembly against the design intent. By precisely recording the X, Y, and Z coordinates of the target, points are generated which can then be analyzed via regression algorithms for the construction of features. CMMs can also be programmed to repeatedly measure identical parts, thus a CMM can be a specialized form of industrial robot.

Type of CMM's include: Gantry (extremely large), Cantilever, Bridge (most common) and Column.
